Legaspi...Cantanduanes...

Kumusta!

I was very sad to leave Vietnam! The last night there was so much fun. We sat outside at a street restaurant/bar type thing, across the street from 'Crazy Girls'. The potential for gossip was very high. Watching all the men go into the bars, buying the girlies drinks and taking photos was amusing. I wish Alex had thought to do this every night! We considered going inside for a drink at one point, but decided it wasn't the best idea. The end of the evening was not so fun! The second Alex turned off the light a MASSIVE cockroach ran across the floor and then under the wardrobe. Alex was very annoyed at me for making him try and get the intruder out. Whilst shaking around the wardrobe an even bigger cockroach came out and then ran back in again! It was easily one of my worst nights out here so far. Alex decided there was nothing we could do and me sitting up all night on guard was a mistake. He wouldn't even let me keep the light on so I had to use my phone to look around. He climbed back into bed and went to sleep within minutes! MISTAKE! I sat up for around 2 or 3 hours and eventually went to sleep. I was not happy with him in the morning.

So far Alex and I really haven't done anything in the Philippines. We arrived in Manila quite late in the evening, considered sleeping at the airport as we would be back again within 12 hours, but eventually waited for a taxi. The accommodation wasn't brilliant. A communal toilet and shower and a room with a double bed and a fan. At least there was hardly any places for cockroaches to hide. The next day we got up early to go to the airport. When we got there we found out that our plane had been rescheduled for 1:10pm around a month ago. So we sat in the airport and waited- dull. We arrived in Legaspi with the intention of hiring a scooter to go see the the Volcano- Mount Mayon. By the time we had found decent accommodation (which again was pretty expensive) it was too late. So we chilled out, had a look around the millions of burger stands and headed for the mall...

There on the wall...heaven sent...a Harry Potter poster advertising the latest movie on at the cinema. I originally wanted to wait and watch Harry Potter Boxing Day, but it was too good to be true...I couldn't resist. The show was in English with no subtitles, so it was no different really to watching it in England. I enjoyed it very much. Next door to the cinema there was more of heaven, Bingo, but Alex didn't wanna go...

The next day we headed for Cantanduanes...The journey itself was good fun and I particularly enjoyed riding on the top of the Jeepney (until the rain came down). I remember when I was younger, for some reason or another my Dad had to drive a van. I remember that either Adam or Ben were allowed to stand in the back of the van because of limited space in the front (don't worry, only for a very small journey). Being a girl and young I had to be strapped in safely in the front seat. I feel that taking this 30 minute journey sat on top of a jeep makes up for this deprivation.

I still don't really understand why we went to Cantanduanes. I think Alex was just desperate to get off the beaten track again after spending so much time surrounded by tourists in Vietnam. The place we stayed at was OK, don't get me wrong, but there was nothing to do. The beach was just a normal beach, far from spectacular. The hut we stayed in was made out of bamboo or something and had a million entrances for insects, including 1 enormous spider one evening. The toilet was so small that it was clearly made for the borrowers...and it had no flush (yet Alex thinks this could take off in the UK). There was no shower either so we had to go outside to another building. It did have a hammock though which I adopted. The only real reason to go to this island was to surf...and it clearly stated in the book that the wave was not for beginners. A surfer we met at the resort even suggested that some medium to professional surfers would find this wave intimidating. Alex chose to ignore this advice and wanted to learn to surf there anyway. The lady who owned the resort disagreed and organised for Alex to go to another bay to learn...no professional wave for him. The weather wasn't great though, so I stayed behind. Alex suggested that I might do the washing whilst he was away! I did it- how wifely of me.

We had to leave Cantanduanes a day early because the weather was just horrendous. We thought it would be best to travel on a wet day. Yet again I was ill this day. I don't know what is wrong with me. I am not an ill person, yet over the past 6 months I have taken more medication than I have done in the previous 22 and a half years of my life put together. Since we have been back in Legaspi we haven't been able to do much because of the rain. Of course I have taken this opportunity to catch up on Eastenders and start searching for Christmas presents! After spending 4 hours on the Internet yesterday we vacated the Internet Cafe and to our surprise Legaspi finally had some sun! Alex and I speedily made our way to the Volcano! The place where we stopped on the Volcano was pretty cloudy, but worth doing. It would have been a shame to miss out on one of the biggest attractions in South Luzon. We were meant to go to Donsol to snorkel with the whale sharks, but unfortunately they haven't migrated yet so was already one attraction we had missed.

We leave for Cebu today, flying with Cebu Pacific. My friend has already notified me or a pretty cool safety dance they do so my camera will be ready! Hopefully the weather will be much nicer in Cebu...both our tans are fading (sad face). Alex's nose is peeling beautifully however which is one positive!

Phu Quoc Island...Saigon...

Hey guys and girls... last post from Vietnam :-(

The journey to Phu Quoc took longer than I expected it too. I am not cut out for these long journeys anymore...China took it out of me. We were on the bus for 6 hours, followed by a short trip to the dock, a 2 and a half hour boat ride to the island, and finally a 30 minute bus ride to the place we planned on staying. After an hours search (carrying my bag which still makes my arms go numb) we found our cheapest accommodation yet. Just $6 per night, no air con and a cold shower, but it was nice enough and close to the beach.

The day after we arrived we hired a motorbike and explored the island. This was defo good fun. The beaches we came across were pretty much empty and the people we passed along our way were so friendly, constantly shouting hello. Of course Alex got lost on the way home and refused to believe me when I told him we had just gone in a circle! We found our way home eventually and pretty much ended the day there. We had booked to start my diving course the next day and had to be up at 6:30am...ahhh.

I really don't know what I expected to be taught during the dive course. I also don't know why I thought I would enjoy learning how to dive at all considering I don't particularly like it when I can't breath through my nose. During the diving theory lessons you are taught that scuba divers are the happiest people alive, and you will have such a good time learning how to dive. I did NOT have a good time. I would never in a million years do this course again, even if I was paid. I have had time to think this through and I would need at least 5,000 pounds payment to consider it, perhaps even 10,000. Saying that, I am glad that I have done it, because I think diving in the Philippines is going to be amazing. Perhaps it was better that I didn't know what to expect and got on with the course.

It was learning the diving skills that I really hated. Day 1- I meet my instructor who I am not sure I particularly bonded with. He was nice enough and was very patient with me whilst I took ridiculous amounts of time to complete some of the tasks, but at one point during the course he hadn't even noticed that I had floated to the surface and come back down again. Going down under the water was a very weird experience. I think part of the problem was that I had no time to get used to just breathing under the water...straight away he was asking me to learn some skills. I could do most of them with no problem. Taking my regulator out, buddy breathing etc. Taking my mask off was the biggest problem. At first he asked me to fill my mask up to the half way point with water, and then empty it- are you crazy? Ok, calm Jenna, you can do it...I did it and was very pleased with myself. Then he asked me to fill my mask up completely- what, why on earth would I fill my mask up with water whilst diving?! Ok, calm Jenna, you can do it...I did it and was even more pleased with myself. Little did I know that the instructor was scheming...planning to make my life living hell for the next 2 and a half days, plotting how many times he could make me fill my mask up with water and take it off completely...I was not prepared for the second lesson of the day. Originally I was meant to start the lesson by taking my mask off for 1 minute and then putting it back on. It didn't go as he had planned. I spent so long getting up the courage to do it that we moved on...he said it was important we came back to this skill tomorrow because I would eventually have to learn to swim without my mask on. From that moment panic and nerves kicked it. I dreaded the next lesson. Alex and I even went down to the beach after the first lesson to practise removing my mask...I couldn't do it. I understand that to most water babies this fear sounds completely irrational, but I have not gone under water without pinching my nose for approximately 10 years. The next day I questioned the purpose of this skill...he said that whilst diving someone might kick my mask off...firstly, if someone kicked my mask off I would kick theirs off and take their cylinder with me on my way up, and secondly, I would hold my nose automatically. Cry...he still made me do it. It took me a long time to take my mask off under the water for that minute. We came up a few times, did nothing under water for about 10 minutes. I did it eventually, but using my own special methods. I took it off, pinched my nose, and when I felt confident enough, removed my fingers and stayed there for a whole minute. Well done me...the instructor shook my hand and we went for a dive.

He only made me take my mask off one more time after this. He also didn't make me swim with my mask off, result. He defo couldn't be bothered to wait for me to do it. It was a nice day and he wanted to go diving. He did however make me fill up my mask several more times. Every time he said, "We both know you can do this well"...errr hello, why do you keep making me do it then!? The 3 days were just torturous for me...I was so happy and relieved to get it over with. I am very much looking forward to diving in the Philippines, but will be defo limiting it to 1 dive at a time...2 dives worth of nose holding is just too much for me!

The rest of Phu Quoc was much better! Alex and I gave the motorbike back and just chilled out on the beach. I am soooo burnt at the moment it's probably good that I'm back in Saigon and in the rain. I am also very excited to see that Christmas decorations have gone up in Saigon! Defo got me in a Christmas mood and craving my Mum's roast dinner more than ever!

We leave Vietnam tomorrow which is very sad. I can't believe it has already been 4 weeks. I have liked it here a lot, probably more than China. It will be weird going to the Philippines where there will be less tourists around and not as many people will speak English. I am also unaware of the YouTube situation out there and fear Eastenders may be difficult to watch, particularly now the Christmas build-up has begun! I am sure I will manage to watch it some how. I don't doubt that this last part of the trip will absolutely whiz past, so gotta make the most of my last month! Very excited.

Ho Chi Minh City...

Hello all and newby follower James Cox...

Alex and I have become lazy travellers! At the moment it's more like a holiday. The original plan was to go to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) for no more than 3 days...then spend some time in the Mekong Delta before heading to Phu Quoc Island. We ended up spending 6 nights in Saigon, before heading straight to Phu Quoc. When we first arrived in Saigon I decided it was about time we did some shopping...unfortunately everything I liked was either in the wrong size, or far too expensive. I was expecting to find loads of clothes for very little money...this did not happen. OK, I could shop on the market and buy beach wear, but considering most of my life is spent in cold England there didn't seem to be much point. I was shocked at some of the prices of party dresses, exceeding 100 pounds in some shops...Maybe I just have expensive taste. Day 1 shopping was therefore a disaster! However during my many shop visits Alex decided he would like to have a suit tailor-made.

Day 2 was therefore spent shopping as well! Alex had already found one of the most expensive suit tailors in Saigon to make his suits...He just had to decide which style he wanted. This led to one of the best things that has happened on our trip so far. Whilst we were in China we bought many DVDs. Seens as I have missed the whole of Gossip Girl season 4 so far I had to look elsewhere for my Chuck Bass fix. I bought Gossip Girl seasons 1-3 and somehow persuaded Alex to watch it! (Note to brothers and parents: Gossip Girl seasons 1-3 is still on my Christmas list, a fake version is not acceptable within my amazing DVD collection). I knew Alex would also love Chuck Bass! Finally in Saigon Alex decides that Chuck is his hero and would like a suit just like his! This was risky, for those of you who do watch Gossip Girl you will know that Chuck wears some pretty mental suits that clearly cost an absolute fortune...and not many people could pull them off...Either way Alex chose the tux he wore to the prom in season 2...See photos below! This suit was bright blue! The tailor didn't have the fancy fabric in such a bright colour so he had to use cotton! We were both so unsure about how it would turn out. Luckily Alex loves both his new suits, and so do I...Others may have a VERY different opinion (See below for photos, comments welcome!) Either way I'm happy for Alex to keep copying Chuck's style!

Once Alex had ordered his suits I was a bit jealous. On day 3 I decided I would have a tailor-made dress- more shopping. I went to a much cheaper shop considering I wear my dresses once or twice. The lady who made my dresses was very nice though. The shop didn't have the fabrics I wanted so she took me to the market to select some. I designed a dress to copy one that I had found in a shop which was way too expensive, and another I found in her book. New Years Eve outfit sorted! Buying the dresses and suits meant we had to hang around Saigon longer than we should have done for fittings etc. We hadn't done any of the recommended sites so we decided we should probably book a tour to somewhere in the Mekong Delta.

On Day 4 we went to Can Tho. The trip was good fun...but a very brief glimpse of the Delta. We were guided to a couple of Islands, drank some honey tea, held a massive snake, listened to some singers and watched some coconut things being made. We also had a couple of boat trips which I enjoyed and a bike ride around one Island (Alex consistently trying to over-take me made this part less enjoyable). Still it was a pleasant change to the squillions of motor bikes everywhere and the afternoon rain in Saigon.

That's it for Saigon...Mostly chilling out and shopping. I also persuaded Alex to buy a pink nipple bar which is another very exciting part of our trip and well worth a mention in my blog. We did intend to leave for Phu Quoc on day 5 but limited space on the bus meant we had to stay another night. Now we are in Phu Quoc where I have had the most awful 3 days ever! More to come in my next post!

xoxo
